Varsity Eight Dominates In Las Vegas

Apr 11, 2021

LAS VEGAS – Cal's varsity eight shaved off almost four seconds from its time the previous day and registered an impressive victory over up-and-coming Alabama on Sunday at the Las Vegas Invitational.

The Golden Bears' women's rowing team also notched a win in the second varsity eight race – with another improved performance from their boat – while their varsity four came in second place.

The varsity eight completed Sunday's race in a time of 6:17.39, easily outdistancing the Crimson Tide, which finished in 6:25.20. USC was third at 6:32.29.

The Bears clocked a time of 6:21.91 on Saturday.

"We made a nice improvement," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "We rowed with more confidence. Alabama is really good, so it was a good for our first test of the year. It was good to see us row with more confidence when it was a little harder."

The Bears' second varsity eight also made it 2-for-2 for the weekend, finishing in a time of 6:31.10. That was almost four seconds better than Alabama and over two seconds better than Saturday's performance.

"Similar to the varsity, they took away some lessons from the first day and looked a little more confident and solid in their approach today," Acosta said.

Cal's varsity four couldn't replicate its victory on Saturday, finishing over seven seconds behind Alabama with a time of 7:22.33.

The weekend marked the Bears' first competition in 18 months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cal will next host Stanford for The Big Row on the Oakland Estuary on April 24.

"This team has had a really good attitude since we first came back in January," Acosta said. "They were fun to be around on raceday. They may have been a little nervous – or maybe a lot nervous – but they were supportive and energetic. We are just grateful for the opportunity to come down here."
