Ducks In Seventh After Round One

Apr 12, 2021

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Yuki Moriyama turned in his fifth straight round of par or better after an even-par 70 to sit in a tie for 15th, while Oregon is in seventh place as a team at 12 over following round one of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.

How It Happened: Moriyama played solid on the front nine, making birdies at holes No. 2, 6 and 7 while bogeying the fourth to make the turn at 2 under. He got to 3 under with a birdie at the par-3 12th hole and held a share of the lead for a few holes on the back nine. However, the freshman would stumble a bit down the stretch, making bogey at 16 before hitting his tee shot at the par-3 18th out-of-bounds to card a double bogey and drop back to even.

Tom Gueant shot a 1-over 71 and was also in the top five individually at one point before dropping some shots coming in to sit in a tie for 18th. He went out in 1-under 34, making at eagle at the par-5 ninth to bounce back after going 3 over through two holes. A birdie at 11 got him to 2 under, however he would go 3 over in the final seven holes to fall back over par.

Craig Ronne and Nate Stember each shot a 3-over 73 and are tied for 41st. The two of them turned their days around down the stretch, with Stember going bogey free with a pair of birdies in the final eight holes to fight back from being 5 over through 10. Ronne was 7 over through eight, but battled back by going 4 under in the last 10, highlighted by an eagle at the ninth. Greg Solhaug matched Ronne and Stember with a 73, competing as an individual.

Owen Avrit shot a 5-over 75 and was the final counting score in the six-count-five format, with his round highlighted by a long birdie putt at the par-4 14th.

Notable: Moriyama has shot par or better in each of his last five rounds … He has also been the highest Duck player on the leaderboard in each of the last four rounds … The seven Oregon players in the field combined to go 7 under on the par-5 ninth hole … The Ducks led the field in total birdies with 22.
