Kevin Kobrine Earns Weekly Honors
Kevin Kobrine was named Monday as the Molten/Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Offensive Player of the Week. The redshirt sophomore was also selected as Off the Block's National Opposite of the Week.
Kobrine led the Bruins in kills in a split of last week's matches against second-ranked BYU. He averaged 5.0 kills/set and hit .426 on 61 swings with 35 kills. His total of 23 kills in the win over the Cougars was a career-best effort. Two of his kills saved set points in a Bruin comeback from an 18-24 third-set deficit. In addition, he added a team-best and career-high 12 digs for a double-double in the victory. Both the kills (23) and the digs (12) totals represent the most by a UCLA player in a match this season.
With the win over BYU, UCLA clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's MPSF Tournament. The Bruins will play in the first quarterfinal match on April 22 at 1 p.m. PT against a yet to be determined opponent. The MPSF Tournament will be held April 22-24 at Smith Fieldhouse on the BYU campus. Semifinal matches will be played April 23 at 3 and 6 p.m. PT. The Championship match is set for a 6 p.m. PT start on April 24.
BYU will be the No. 1 seed in the event with Pepperdine at No. 3 and Grand Canyon as the No. 4 seed. The winner of the MPSF Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the seven team NCAA Tournament field. The full NCAA bracket, including the selection of two at-large teams, will be announced on April 25 on ncaa.com. The First Opening Match in the National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship is scheduled for May 3. The Second and Third Opening Matches are slated for May 4. The Semifinals will be held May 6 and the Final is on May 8. All of this year's NCAA matches will be held at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio.
