No. 1 UCLA Picks Up Two Wins Over No. 5 LMU

LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA (21-1) posted back-to-back home wins on Wednesday over No. 5 Loyola Marymount (20-4) at Mapes Beach. The Bruins defeated the Lions 3-2 in the first dual and won 4-1 in the second dual. With the wins, the Bruins improved to 13-2 all-time against the LMU Lions with 11 straight wins in the series.

In the opening dual, Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade defeated Sydnie Herrmann and Darby Dunn in straight sets on court four 21-14, 21-19.

But the Lions tied it at 1-1 on court two where Reka Orsi Toth and Selina Marolf outlasted Lea Monkhouse and Abby Van Winkle 14-21, 21-18, 15-12.

In the second wave, court one's Lexy Denaburg and Savvy Simo defeated LMU's Iya Lindahl and Megan Rice 21-17, 21-17 to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

Again LMU tied it at 2-2 on court three as Savannah Slattery and Jessie Prichard defeated Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks 21-18, 21-18.

It all came down to court five where UCLA's Jaden Whitmarsh and Rileigh Powers won their 15th consecutive match, defeating the Lions' Emma Doud and Madi Firnett 21-19, 21-16.

In exhibition play, LMU's Cassie Chinn and Jacinda Ramirez defeated Cami Sanchez and Hannah Phair 21-19, 14-21, 15-10.

In the second dual, Muret and Quade took down Herrmann and Dunn in straight sets on court four 21-13, 21-13.

Court two's Monkhouse and Van Winkle took down Orsi Toth and Marolf in two sets 21-17, 21-16.

Firnett and Doud got the Lions on the board with a straight-set win on court five over Powers and Whitmarsh 21-17, 21-16.

Denaburg and Simo clinched the win for UCLA on court one with a come-from-behind win over Lindahl and Rice 17-21, 21-16, 15-9.

Newberry and Sparks bounced back after dropping the first match on court three and the first set in the second dual to provide the 4-1 final, defeating Slattery and Prichard 17-21, 21-17, 15-12.

In exhibition action, Sanchez and Phair also bounced back, but against a different pair, taking down LMU's Georgia Fusco and Michaela Rezentes 21-17, 21-18.

UCLA will now travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to compete in the Center of Effort Challenge hosted by Cal Poly. The Bruins will open the tournament on Friday, April 16 with No. 8 Grand Canyon (16-5) at 2:00 p.m. PDT. UCLA will end day one with No. 5 LMU (20-4) at 3:15 p.m. The Bruins will open Saturday, April 17 with No. 6 Cal Poly (16-5) at 2:00 p.m. followed by No. 2 USC (18-2) at 6:30 p.m. PT.
