Cal Falls In Overtime Finale

Apr 16, 2021

BERKELEY - It was a sentimental Friday afternoon in Berkeley for the final California game of the regular season. The Golden Bears bid adieu to five seniors - Kailee Gifford, Julia Curtis, Morgan Rogers, Whitney Davis, and Kai Henderson.

Following the Senior Day ceremony, Cal faced rival Stanford for the second time this season after a 1-0 victory on the Farm on March 20. Despite a strong defensive shutout throughout regulation, the Golden Bears fell 1-0 against Stanford in the first overtime period.

While possession was well distributed between the Bears and the Card, Stanford found the advantage in attack and outshot the Bears 14-2. Stanford took its first two shot attempt in the first four minutes of the game but the stout Cal defense would prevent any shots for the next 20 minutes. Angelina Anderson collected first save of the afternoon off a low driven shot from Rubinstein in the 24th minute.

Paige Metayer had the best look for the Bears in the 41st minute when she headed the ball off a Julia Curtis flip throw that was saved by Stanford's Katie Meyer at the bottom right. The next Cal shot would not occur until 80th minute when Kaylee Nguyen struck a shot from the top of the box that went wide.

Although Cal had plenty of ball movement throughout the game, pressure from the Card kept the Bears off the mark. Amaya Gray was a driving force for the Bears' attack often driving ball down to the final third.

Regulation ended with the game at a 0-0 draw, but an early overtime goal in the 93rd minute gave the Cardinal a 1-0 sudden victory. Cal keeper Anderson picked up six saves from the Stanford attack.

Cal will determine its postseason plans on Monday, April 19 for the NCAA D1 Women's Soccer Selection Show starting at 1 p.m. eastern time.
