Huskies Defeat Cougars A Second Time

Apr 16, 2021

SEATTLE –  Husky women's tennis increases its winning streak to five today with a 4-1 win over the Washington State Cougars in the second Boeing Apple Cup Series Match. Earlier this season the Dawgs defeated the Cougars 5-2 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

"It's our last home match so I think the girls were excited to come out and leave it all out here and have one of our best competitive performances," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "I think we did that. It's always easy to get up for the Apple Cup and we played them earlier in the season so we knew what to expect. To go 2-0 against the Cougs this year is great!"

Washington (14-6, 5-5 Pac-12) once again took the doubles point and three singles wins to secure the victory over the Cougars (13-12, 4-6) and left two singles matches unfinished. Junior Nika Zupancic clinched the match battling to win the second set, 7-5, after winning the first set 6-2 at No. 4, improving to 4-0.

Junior Sedona Gallagher was the first to finish in singles play with a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory on court No. 3. Junior Sarah-Maude Fortin also had a decisive win on court No. 2 defeating Hikaru Sato 6-4, 6-2.

48th-ranked senior Vanessa Wong won her first set 6-2 and was ahead 6-5 in the second set at the time of Zupancic's win. Junior Zoey Weil lost her first set, but was tied in 6-6 in the second set.

Gallagher and Zupancic got a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Wong and Fortin clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1.

"I thought we came out from start to finish and kept our foot on the gas, we played extremely well. We are a much better team than when we played them back in February and it's fun to see the progress that our team has made," said Stephenson. "It will give us a lot of momentum going into next week."

The Huskies head down to San Diego on Tuesday, April 20, to play the University of San Diego at 1:30 PM PT, before heading into the Pac-12 Championships on Friday.
