Apr 17, 2021

LOS ANGELES — Tailbacks Stephen Carr and Vavae Malepeai each had 1-yard touchdown runs and freshmen Jaxson Dart and Michael Jackson III connected on a 3-yard TD pass on the last play of the game to help the Cardinal team beat the Gold, 27-7, in USC football's Spring Showcase in front of approximately 5,000 fans at the Coliseum on Saturday (April 17).

The Trojan roster and coaching staff was split into two squads for the game, which featured four 12-minute quarters of live contact play. Offensive coordinator Graham Harrell served as the head coach of the Cardinal team and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando was the Gold team's head coach.

Placekicker Alex Stadthaus hit field goals of 34 and 47 yards to add to the Cardinal squad's point total.

The Gold team got on the board first when quarterback Mo Hasan hit wide receiver Bru McCoy on a 25-yard scoring toss early in the opening quarter. But Hasan left the game in the Gold's next series with an undetermined knee injury and freshman Miller Moss took most of the remaining snaps for the Gold.

Quarterback Kedon Slovis hit 8-of-12 passes for 128 yards with an interception for the Cardinal squad, while Dart was 7-of-13 for 99 yards with the TD and a pick. Wide receiver Drake London led the Cardinal with 7 receptions for 139 yards, while Jackson added 3 for 42 yards. Carr ran for 53 yards and Malepeai had 30 yards, both on 8 carries.

The Cardinal defense was led by safety Briton Allen, cornerback Isaac Taylor-Stuart and inside linebacker Raymond Scott, who each made 5 tackles. Cornerback Chris Steele and inside linebacker Spencer Gilbert each snagged an interception.

For the Gold team, Hasan hit both of his passes for 74 yards and the TD before leaving, while Moss was 7-of 13 for 34 yards. Tailbacks Keontay Ingram, a transfer from Texas, ran for 20 yards on 7 carries and freshman Brandon Campbell had 19 yards on 6 tries.

Inside linebacker Tuasivi Nomura had 7 tackles for the Gold, while safeties Isaiah Pola-Mao and Calen Bullock each had 5 tackles and outside linebacker Drake Jackson had 3 tackles with a 13-yard sack and a deflection. The Gold squad posted 5 sacks. Cornerbacks Dorian Hewett and Joshua Jackson both had interceptions.

Punter Ben Griffiths averaged 47.5 yards on his 4 boots for the Gold team.

The Trojans' spring football practice continues with on-campus practices the next 2 weeks, concluding on April 30.

USC's 12-game schedule in 2021 features seven home games, including visits from non-conference opponents BYU and San Jose State (both finished in the final AP Top 25 last year) and Pac-12 foes UCLA, Stanford, Utah, Arizona and Oregon State.
