Rogers Achieves Olympic Standard At West Coast Classic
EUGENE, Ore. – Camryn Rogers continued to cement her legacy in California track & field history by achieving the Olympic standard in the women's hammer throw, leading a strong day from the Golden Bears at the West Coast Classic on Saturday.
With the throws and distance groups competing at the new Hayward Field, Rogers went 73.09 meters (239-9) on her first throw of the competition to pass the Olympic standard of 72.50 meters. The lifetime best toss made Rogers the No. 4 performer all-time in NCAA history in the event and she currently stands seventh on the world leaders list.
"It was amazing to be able to compete amongst such talented throwers and in a brand-new circle at historic Hayward Field," Rogers said. "I'm so excited to have hit the Olympic qualifying mark and I know there's a lot more in the tank!"
Rogers is now just 4 feet, 11 inches off the NCAA record held by Arizona State's Maggie Ewen set in 2017 and one inch behind DeAnna Price for No. 3 on the NCAA all-time list.
Freshman Garrett MacQuiddy continued his impressive rookie campaign for the Bears, taking his fourth win in as many tries this year, clocking a lifetime best 1:49.97 in the men's 800-meters. Teammate Moises Medrano finished just behind, taking third in 1:50.84.
Annie Boos earned another victory, crossing the line in 10:26.06 in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and Margie Cullen took third-place in 10:33.09. Mina Anglero also place for Cal, finishing the women's 800-meter race with a time of 2:09.27 to take third.
The Golden Bear sprints and jumps crews were not to be outdone in Tucson, Arizona, as they also turned in multiple wins and Cal all-time top 10 marks. Deshae Wise improved on her second-best time in Cal history in the women's 100-meter hurdles, out-leaning Oregon's Emily Sloan at the line to take the win in 13.15 seconds.
Hawa Wague continued improving her marks as she gets more attempts on the season and she cleared a new lifetime best of 1.78 meters (5-10) in the women's high jump to take third-place based upon misses. The height moves Wague into a tie for sixth on the Cal all-time list in the event.
It was another strong double-day in the sprints for Ezinne Abba as she blazed to new personal records in both the women's 100-meters and 200-meters races. She closed the night with a time of 23.63 seconds in the 200, moving the sophomore into a tie for the eighth-fastest in Cal history.
Asha Fletcher had her best day as a Golden Bear to date as she's posted new personal bests multiple times throughout the season. She leaped to a win in the women's triple jump competition with a new best of two feet, going 13.22 meters (43-4.50) to earn her first victory and join the record book with the six-best leap all-time at Cal.
Continuing to recover from an injury, Henry Larkin has gotten faster with each week of competition and he clocked a season-best time of 46.68 seconds to take his second win in the last three men's 400-meter races.
