Rowing Ends Day One of the Big Ten Invitational on a High Note

BETHEL, Ohio – The No. 18-ranked Washington State rowing team put together a strong first day at the Big Ten Invitational on Saturday, April 17, as the Cougars captured a second-place finishing in all three afternoon races, knocking off No. 15-ranked Wisconsin and Notre Dame on Harsha Lake.

The Cougars, who are competing east of the Mississippi River for the first time since the spring of 2018, wrapped up its six-race day by a trio of second-place finishes in the afternoon session of the Big Ten Invitational.

The No. 18-ranked Cougs knocked off No. 15 Wisconsin and Notre Dame in the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight and varsity four races. WSU finished second to No. 3-ranked Ohio State in all three afternoon races. The varsity eight boat got things started by clocking in at 6:43.76 to place second in their race against the Buckeyes, Badgers and Fighting Irish.

The good vibes continued to roll for the Cougs in the second varsity eight race, as the WSU boat clocked in at 6:50.71 to take second. WSU wrapped up its first day at the Big Ten Invitational with a second-place finish in the varsity four race, clocking in at 7:30.43.

"We improved from the morning races, which we needed to do," said WSU rowing head coach Jane LaRiviere. "Kudos to the team for rallying, but they can't let up. We have another big one tomorrow. There is so much speed here and we have to show on the water what we can and can't do."

Washington State got the Big Ten Invitational underway with a trio of races Saturday morning. The Cougars were paired up with No. 6 Michigan and No. 11 Rutgers. WSU put up some competitive times in all three morning races, but ultimately finished third in all three morning races. The first varsity eight boat timed in at 6:38.68, while the second varsity eight finished its race in 6:57.51. The varsity four boat wrapped up the morning for the Cougs, checking in with a time of 7:41.05.

The second day of the Big Ten Invitational gets underway for Washington State this Sunday, April 18. The Cougars will race against No. 11 Rutgers, No. 12 Indiana and No. 20 Syracuse on day two of the regatta. The first varsity eight race will get the day started at 6 a.m. PT, while the second varsity eight race will follow at 6:10 a.m. PT. Washington State will conclude its nine-race weekend on Harsha Lake with the varsity four race at 6:20 a.m. PT.
