Apr 17, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – It was a beautiful day in Salt Lake City as the University of Utah Football team welcomed 6,500 fans back to Rice-Eccles Stadium for its annual spring game. Through four quarters, it was the red team that came away with the victory, beating the black squad 21-0 to wrap up spring practices.

The long-awaited debut of graduate transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer didn't disappoint as the Austin, Texas, native went a perfect 15-for-15 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

Despite neither team scoring in the first quarter, Brewer got the red offense running on all cylinders in the second, linking up with Solomon Enis on a 27-yard passing play for a first down to start the first drive of the second quarter.

The duo would end the drive by matching up once again as Brewer would thread the needle to an open Enis in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown to give the red team a 7-0 advantage. Enis finished the game with four catches for 44 yards, averaging 11.0 yards per reception.

Brewer showed off his range on the next drive, throwing a game-long 40-yard pass to Devaughn Vele with Vele pulling down the catch under tight coverage for a first down. It would be Vele again at the end of the drive with a five-yard touchdown catch from Brewer to give the red squad a two-touchdown lead to end the half.

The red team would punch in its final touchdown of the game with time winding down in the fourth quarter as running back Faysal Aden found a hole, shooting the gap to notch a one-yard rushing score and the 21-0 victory.

Chris Curry led the red team on the ground with 44 rushing yards, averaging a game-high 7.3 yards per carry while quarterback Ja'Quinden Jackson added 31 yards on nine carries. On the black team, TJ Pledger contributed 31 rushing yards on six carries, putting out a solid 5.2 yards per carry.

On defense, the black team was led by newcomer Karene Reid, who racked up six total tackles with 1.0 sack and a team-high 2.0 tackles for loss, along with a pass breakup. Aaron Lowe also recorded six tackles for the black squad with freshman Cole Bishop adding four.

For the red squad, Xavier Carlton led both teams in tackles for loss with 4.5 for a loss of 16 yards, recording five total tackles (1.0 sack). Freshman Jonny Fanaika also proved the defensive edge was strong today for the red team, racking up three tackles that included a sack.

With the spring game wrapping up spring practices, the Utes officially turn their attention to the 2021 fall season. Utah will open the year against Weber State in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 2.
