Cougars Fall at No. 4 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. (April 18, 2021) – The fourth-ranked Pepperdine Waves captured a 7-0 nonconference victory over Washington State Sunday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. 
In doubles play, the Waves (18-3) captured the opening point with wins on courts 1 and 2. At No. 1, WSU's (13-13) Melisa Ates and Hikaru Sato held a 4-2 lead but could not close it out as Jessica Failla and Shiori Fukuda won the final four games to clinch the match. At No. 3, WSU's Michaela Bayerlova and Yang Lee were leading 6-5 when play was stopped with the doubles point secured.
In singles play, Pepperdine captured all six matches in straight sets. At No. 1, Bayerlova held a 5-4 lead in the second set but could not hold on, falling to Ashley Lahey, 6-3, 7-5. At No. 5, Jittakoat forced a tiebreaker in the first and after being down 5-1 in the second earned a break and had two more break points to close within 5-4, before falling 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The Cougars are next in action Monday when they visit UC Santa Barbara. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
