BERKELEY - After helping the California field hockey team earn a sweep on the east coast this past weekend, including a combined 19 saves and a shutout, Cato Knipping was named the America East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as announced by the conference.
This is Knipping's first career weekly honor and the Golden Bears' first weekly honor of the 2021 spring campaign.
A native of The Netherlands, Knipping ended the 2021 spring season on a high note with a shutout on five saves at Vermont on Sunday in the season finale. It was her second shutout of the season after blanking UC Davis in the home opener on March 12.
She started the weekend trip making eight stops in Cal's 3-1 win at UAlbany on Thursday. Cal's goalie made six saves in the Bears' 5-1 win vs. New Hampshire on Saturday. She garnered a 0.67 goals-against average on the weekend and finished the season with a 1.68 GAA.
The accolade comes a week after Knipping made a combined 20 saves in two matches against No. 18 Stanford last week, including a career-high 12 saves at Stanford on April 6.
