USC Men's Volleyball Faces No. 9 Grand Canyon In Quarterfinals Of MPSF Tournament At BYU

Apr 20, 2021

The USC men's volleyball team (5-12 overall, 5-12 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) begins quarterfinal play in the 7-team MPSF Tournament at BYU when the unranked, fifth-seeded Trojans take on fourth-seed and No. 9-ranked Grand Canyon (8-10, 8-10) on Thursday (April 22) at 5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT. The winner advances to an MPSF semifinal match on Friday (April 23), with that winner playing in the MPSF Championship match on Saturday (April 24) at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT for an automatic berth into the NCAA tourney. It will be the Trojans'third consecutive match versus GCU, as USC closed out its regular season with a pair of losses against the Lopes.

All of USC's home matches in the Galen Center are video-streamed live for free on, except for matches televised live on Pac-12 Network. USC's online announcers are ex-Trojan player and assistant coach Mark Beltran and onetime Northeastern player/Winthrop assistant coach Paul Duchesne. Fans also can follow USC home matches through Live Stats at and all matches via Twitter (@USCmensvolley).

USC is not ranked in the current AVCA Division I-II Top 15 poll. Grand Canyon is No. 9.

USC trails in its series with Grand Canyon, 7-4, and has dropped the past 4 meetings, most recently a 3-2 home loss on April 10.

USC series records versus the other MPSF schools: BYU (23-48), Concordia (9-6), Pepperdine (43-71), Stanford (70-34) and UCLA (46-100).

USC is 29-31 all-time in conference/regional playoffs, dating to 1971, including winning 7 playoff championships. In MPSF tourney play only, USC is 14-16 (the Trojans won the 2009 MPSF tourney). *In their only MPSF Tournament meeting versus Grand Canyon, USC posted a 3-0 quarterfinal win in 2019 (Troy then beat UCLA 3-1, before falling 3-0 to host Pepperdine in the championship match).
