Gabriel Wins National Assistant Coach Of The Year
OMAHA, Neb. – As the Huskies prep for the fifth Final Four appearance during her coaching tenure, Associate Head Coach Leslie Gabriel was named the AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year. Gabriel will help lead the Dawgs in the national semifinals this evening at 4 p.m. Pacific time.
"I coach because I love the people I get to come to work with everyday, both players and staff," said Gabriel. "I am honored to have been picked for this award this year and want to say thank you for the nomination."
Gabriel, in her 20th season on the Husky staff, wins the National Assistant Coach of the Year honor for the first time. She has been the constant in the program during a stretch of 19 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and six Pac-12 titles since she came on staff in 2001, just a few years after completing her playing career as one of the best middle blockers in Husky history.
As a player and then a coach, Gabriel has been a part of 572 wins for Washington Volleyball. Over the past seventeen years, the Huskies have been ranked in the Top-10 in 223 out of the 267 possible polls, and in the Top-25 for every poll save one since September of 2003.
In recent seasons, Gabriel has worked with the Husky middle blockers and Washington's blocking as a whole. The Huskies have ranked in the top-20 nationally in blocks per set in seven of the past nine seasons.
