BERKELEY – All-American Kitty Lynn Joustra scored four goals and the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team held off a late charge by No. 13 Indiana to register a 12-10 victory Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Fellow All-Americans Brigit Mulder and Claire Sonne each added two goals and one assist apiece for Cal (10-6, 5-6), which jumped out to a 6-1 lead midway through the second quarter but could never completely shake the Hoosiers, who are coached by former Cal attacker Taylor Dodson.
Joustra and junior Elli Protopapas scored early goals for the Bears before the Hoosiers got on the scoreboard. Cal then scored four straight goals to open up the lead. The Bears held a 7-3 advantage at halftime.
Indiana cut the deficit to two goals twice in the second half before the Bears notched three in a row in succession themselves to make it 12-7 with 4:45 to play. The Hoosiers answered with a three-goal string of their own to get within a pair of scores for the final time with 1:43 to play.
Goalie Cassidy Ball made seven saves for the Bears.
Cal closes out the regular season Sunday against the Hoosiers. It will be the final home game for the Bears' four seniors – Ball, Sonne, Mulder and injured center Georgia Gilmore. They will be honored in a special pregame ceremony.
