Upset Bid Comes Up Short Against Cardinal

Apr 24, 2021

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Huskies were ready for the challenge of the second-seeded Cardinal today in the Pac-12 Championship quarterfinals, but a heartbreaking loss in doubles wound up looming large today in a 4-2 Stanford win at the Barnes Tennis Center. Washington falls to 15-8 with currently no dual matches left on its schedule between now and the NCAA Selection Show on May 3.

The Huskies had big singles wins from Vanessa Wong and Sedona Gallagher, and Sarah-Maude Fortin was in the midst of a second set tiebreak that would have given her a victory at No. 2 for a third point. Stanford clinched with a second set tiebreak win at No. 6 singles.

The Dawgs fought back impressively in singles considering what a frustrating end it was to doubles play. Stanford got the No. 3 match, 6-3, but the Huskies had 5-3 leads on courts one and two. Wong and Fortin had match point at No. 1, but Stanford saved it and eventually got into a tiebreaker that did not finish. Gallagher and Nika Zupancic couldn't close out Stanford's Arbuthnott and Blake at No. 2, as the Cardinal won the final four games to clinch the doubles point, 7-5.

Gallagher got the Huskies on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Emily Arbuthnott at third singles. Freshman Tara Chilton lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 as Stanford went back ahead, and then the Cardinal got a 6-4, 6-2 win from Ana Geller over Nika Zupancic at No. 4.

But down 1-3, the Huskies were leading on the top two courts and Weil had a set point at 5-4 in the second set that would have pushed it to a decisive third set. But Stanford's Emma Higuchi saved the set point and eventually reached a tiebreaker, and she reached seven first to clinch the win.

Before Stanford clinched, 43rd-ranked Wong got one of her biggest wins, defeating 39th-ranked Gordon, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Gordon made Wong work to close it out, saving several match points and coming back from 2-5 down but Wong finally shut the door. Fortin also had a 5-2 second set lead but Stanford's Angelica Blake fought back and saved a handful of Husky match points there as well, which prevented Fortin from getting the win as their match was suspended when Stanford got its fourth point.
