Baseball Gets the Walk-Off Win Over Arizona State
SALT LAKE CITY – After falling behind two runs in the ninth inning to No. 23 Arizona State, the Utah baseball team responded with three runs of its own for the 7-6 walk-off win over the Sun Devils on Sunday at Smith's Ballpark.
Trailing 6-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Kai Roberts started the inning with an infield single bringing the tying run to the plate. On the first pitch, Christopher Rowan, Jr. crushed a homer to dead center to tie the game. One batter later, Rykker Tom knocked a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Next up, Shea Kramer knocked a single up the middle to score Tom from second giving Utah the 7-6 victory.
Utah totaled 13 hits on the day with every Utah player having a hit in the game.
The Utes had a great start grabbing an early lead in the first inning with a run. Jaylon McLaughlin got a walk and stolen base for Jayden Kiernan to get one of his three hits on the afternoon and put Utah up 1-0.
Still holding a 1-0 lead in the fifth, the Utes got four hits to start the inning capped with a triple from Roberts scoring McLaughlin putting Utah up 3-0.
David Watson locked the Sun Devils down for most of his outing going 6.2 innings and striking out six only allowing two earned runs. They didn't get on the board until the sixth inning with one run, but kept the pressure on from there.
After the Utes had nothing going in the sixth, the Sun Devils once again scored a run in the seventh bringing Utah's lead to just one at 4-3. The Utes answered back in the bottom of the seventh for a big run to push the lead back to two runs.
Both teams went down in order in the eighth setting up the dramatic ninth inning.
Arizona State sustained a big rally in the ninth scoring four runs on five hits to go up 6-4. Utah came right back with the hit by Roberts and blast by Rowan quickly evened things up setting up the walk-off hit from Kramer. Seven runs were scored in the back and forth ninth that gave the Utes their 10th win of the season.
The game-winning RBI from Kramer was his fifth RBI of the weekend for the right fielder. This was the first walk-off win for Utah this season.
Brayson Hurdsman ended up getting the win for Utah moving his record to 1-0.
The win ended the weekend on a strong note for Utah, and will now look forward to playing at Arizona next weekend in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 30.
