Bruins in Santa Rosa for Pac-12 Championships
SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The Bruins open their postseason at the Mayacama Golf Club this week for the Pac-12 Championships. The three-day, 72-hole tournament will be played Monday through Wednesday at the par-72, 6,785-yard layout.
The starting six-some for the Bruins will be seniors Devon Bling and Eddy Lai, juniors Kengo Aoshima and Bryan Wiyang Teoh, sophomore Mason Greene and freshman Dylan Vizanko. The first of two rounds on Monday will begin at 8:06 a.m. off the 10th tee in the order of Vizanko, Greene, Aoshima, Lai, Teoh and Bling. Round three tee times on Tuesday will begin at 10 a.m. off split tees, while the final round on Wednesday will start at 7:30 a.m. off split tees.
The Bruins are playing their eighth tournament of the season, recording a victory at the Lamkin San Diego Classic (March 8-10, +4, 868). UCLA also has an eighth-place finish at the Duck Invitational (March 22-23) and a tied for eighth showing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (Feb. 19-21, +8, 872). Two of the Bruins' three under-par rounds came at the Wyoming Intercollegiate, with the other coming at the Lamkin.
Bling won for the third time in his collegiate career at the Lamkin San Diego Classic (-4, 212), shooting a 4-under 68 and a 3-under 69 to open the tournament. He also placed third at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (-7, 209), shooting a 3-under 69 in round one and a 4-under 68 in his final round. Bling has two other Top 20s, tying for 12th at The Prestige (Feb. 15-17, +1, 214), closing with a 1-under 70, and tying for 18th at the Duck Invitational (+8, 221). The senior opened his most recent tournament, the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (April 5-6, +3, 219), with a 3-under 69, one of his six under-par rounds. He leads the Bruins with a 71.7 scoring average, including a 70.5 average in his opening rounds.
Teoh is second on the team with a 73.1 scoring average. He has four under-par rounds, including a season-low 4-under 68 to open the Wyoming Intercollegiate. He also closed that event with a 1-under 71, tying for eighth (-3, 213). Teoh tied for 11th at the Duck Invitational (+5, 218) and tied for 17th at the Lamkin San Diego Classic (+3, 219), shooting a 2-under 70 to open that event. In the Bruins' last tournament at the Thunderbird Collegiate (April 16-17), he finished at 2-under-par 211 (T-35), closing with a 2-under 69.
Lai is third on the squad with a 73.3 scoring average. His best round of the season was a 4-under 68 in round two at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, where he tied for 17th (+3, 219). Lai also tied for 24th at The Goodwin (March 25-27), finishing at 2-over 212.
Aoshima is playing in his third tournament of the season. He tied for 68th at The Goodwin (+10, 220) and tied for 86th at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (+9, 225). Greene has a pair of under-par rounds this season, shooting a final-round, 2-under 70 at the Lamkin and a final-round, 1-under 71 at the Wyoming Classic. His best finish was at the Lamkin when he tied for 23rd (+5, 221). Vizanko will appear in his third event after playing at the Thunderbird Collegiate (95th) and the Lamkin San Diego Classic (T-108th).
The Bruins have won five Pac-12 Championships (1982, 1983, 1985, 2003, 2006), with six individual winners (Pete Lazlo, 1970; Corey Pavin, 1982; Steve Pate, 1983; Duffy Waldorf, 1985; John Merrick, 2003; Daniel Im, 2006).
