BERKELEY – California track & field earned 18 event wins and collected 22 lifetime bests as the Bears and Cardinal split the 126th edition of the Big Meet on Saturday at Edwards Stadium.
The Cal women defeated Stanford, 88-74, while the Cardinal men beat the Golden Bears, 85-75.
Closing the competition in Big Meet tradition as both teams lined opposite sides of the track for the event, Cal swept the 4x400 relays with season-best times. The men clocked 3:13.40 and the women crossed the line in 3:43.67.
Cal started the day off strong in the men's and women's hammer throw, sweeping the top two spots on the men's side and taking all three places in the women's competition.
Ivar Moisander moved into the ninth spot on the Cal all-time list in the event, going 63.02 meters (206-9) on his fifth attempt to set a personal record and take the men's victory. Michael Gupta took second-place with a new best of his own, throwing 58.79 meters (192-10).
Camryn Rogers took the win on the women's side, throwing 71.39 meters (234-2) followed by Anna Purchase at 61.52 meters (201-10) and Jasmine Blair in third at 57.21 meters (187-8) for the Bears.
The Bears swept the top two spots in the men's discus throw with Iffy Joyner taking medalist honors thanks to a farthest throw of 58.96 meters (193-5). Josh Johnson recorded a new lifetime best heave of 55.15 meters (180-11) to finish as the runner-up as Cal took eight points in the event.
It was a day of doubles for Krissy Smoot as she recorded two wins and two personal bests. Smoot opened her day with a victory in the women's shot put, going 14.46 meters (47-5.25) and followed up with a mark of 51.26 meters (168-2) to take the women's discus title.
Deshae Wise picked up two wins for the Bears in the sprints, taking her fourth victory of the season in the women's 100-meter hurdles behind a wind-aided time of 13.23 seconds. She followed later in the afternoon by passing a Stanford runner in the final 10-meters to clock another wind-aided win of 23.33 seconds in the women's 200-meters.
Cal went one, two in the men's long jump with Kamau Carlisle taking the victory behind a wind-aided jump of 7.39 meters (24-3) and Sanjay Kettels finishing second with a wind-aided mark of 7.27 meters (23-10.25). The Bears tied for second in the women's long jump with Asha Fletcher and Sydney Reid both leaping 5.81 meters (19-0.75) to earn four total points.
Opening the distance runs, Annie Boos recorded her second straight win in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase after she took the victory two weeks ago at the West Coast Classic. She crossed the line in 10:31.12 with teammate Margie Cullen following at 10:40.99 for second.
Garrett MacQuiddy continued his strong freshman campaign, moving from fourth to a battle for the lead from the final turn through the backstretch. MacQuiddy was neck and neck with Stanford's Charles Hicks heading to the finish and Hicks was just able to get the lean at the line as MacQuiddy crossed right behind with a personal record time of 3:43.64 to take second.
In the vertical jumps, Hawa Wague took first in the women's high jump with a top clearance of 1.77 meters (5-9.75) and Amari Turner won the women's pole vault, clearing 3.89 meters (12-9). Paige Martin set a new personal best in the event, getting over 3.74 meters (12-3.25) to finish fourth.
