Three Qualify for U.S Senior World Team Trials
CORALVILLE, IA -- Three Sun Devils solidified their qualification for the 2021 U.S. Senior World Team Trials in September after placing at the 2021 Senior Nationals.
Wrestling alumni Josh Kramer defeated the number one seed, Nahshon Garrett, of the 61 kilogram men's freestyle class on the way to his championship bout against Shelton Mack on Saturday night. In the final seconds of the match, Mack grabbed a takedown to push himself ahead of Kramer for a 3-2 decision win.
Josh Shields and Jacori Teemer both fought their way through the consolation bracket to the fifth place bout to face each other in the 74kg class. Shields was awarded the fifth place podium finish after a forfeit.
Phoenix native Chad Porter placed fourth at the Senior Greco-Roman 97kg weight class on Friday night. Porter went undefeated in three bouts to earn his opportunity to attend the World Team Trials in September.
Sunday will host the final bouts for the UWW Junior Nationals featuring all freshmen including a pair of Sun Devils wrestling against each other in 61kg, Jesse Vasquez and Cleveland Belton. Belton won four matches in the afternoon.
Trey Munoz (79kg) and Julian Chlebove (61kg) round out the group aiming to place on the podium via consolation.
Fall 2021 Sun Devil recruits Richard Figueora (57kg) and Cael Valencia (74kg) made appearances at UWW Juniors. Figueroa, a three-time California state champion, defeated his nemesis Drake Ayala 7-4 en route to the finals bout which will take place Sunday morning.
