Three Finish on Podium at UWW Junior Nationals
CORALVILLE, IA -- Redshirt freshmen Trey Munoz and Cleveland Belton placed on the podium on Sunday morning for their respective weight classes at 2021 UWW Junior Nationals while incoming freshman Richard Figueroa was crowned champion of Junior men's freestyle 57 kilogram class.
Figueroa defeated Ryan Miller (Penn RTC) in back-to-back bouts via tech fall for the best-of-three championship round. With his victory, the two-time Cadet World Team Member will represent Team USA at the UWW Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russia on August 16-22.
The trio join 2021 Senior Nationals placers Josh Kramer, Josh Shields and Chad Porter who earned a spot at the 2021 Senior World Team Trials in September.
After losing via tech fall in the quarterfinals, Munoz (79kg) bounced back to dominate his opponents in three consecutive 10-0 tech fall victories to place himself in the third place bout. Munoz ultimately defeated Brayden Thompson (Izzy Style Wrestling) 8-3.
The third place finish gives Munoz qualifying advantages for both the Pan-American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina and the Pan-American Games in Cali, Colombia.
Belton (61kg) won four bouts in his weekend business trip before his fifth place match opponent forfeited, awarding him the podium placement for the class.
