Tjen Earns Bid to NCAA Singles Championship

May 4, 2021

Oregon true freshman Janice Tjen was selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship Tuesday, earning one of 64 spots in the field after finishing the regular season ranked No. 30 in the ITA Singles Rankings. The competition runs May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The bracket and match times will be announced at a later date.

Tjen is the only the second UO freshman ever to earn a spot in the singles championship and only the second Duck since 2007 to be selected (Alyssa Tobita – 2018). Her bid to the singles tournament is the ninth in program history while she is just the sixth different Oregon player to secure a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship.

Tjen is coming off of an incredible freshman season in which she went 18-2 in singles play, highlighted by a 6-2 record against ranked opponents and an 8-1 mark in Pac-12 play. She also ended the season on a six-match winning streak, with five of those wins coming against ranked opponents. Tjen's only two losses of the season in singles came against opponents ranked in the top 70 of the ITA Singles Top 125.

The freshman became the first Oregon player since 2018 to win Pac-12 Player of the Week honors, earning the award after beating a pair of ranked singles opponents while helping the Ducks to their first ever win over Stanford. Tjen dominated No. 41 Haley Giavara of Cal, 6-1, 6-1, on April 2 before taking a 7-5, 6-3 decision against No. 48 Michaela Gordon of Stanford on April 4, while also helping the Ducks put up the doubles point against the Cardinal.
