Oregon State Hall of Famer and All-American Ted Bates has passed away at the age of 84.
A 1991 Oregon State Hall of Fame selection, Bates lettered for the Oregon State football team from 1956-58, and competed in the 1957 Rose Bowl. An offensive lineman, he was named a First-Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Walter Camp in 1958.
He was the 1958 recipient of the Hayward Award for the top amateur athlete in the state, and he also competed in the 1958 East-West Shrine and Hula Bowl games.
Bates was selected in the fifth round of the 1959 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals, and appeared in 54 professional games from 1959-63.
Bates was also inducted into the 1996 State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
