No. 12 USC Men’s Tennis Blanks Grand Canyon In NCAA First Round
LOS ANGELES — In its 14th consecutive NCAA appearance, the No. 12 USC men's tennis team chalked up another NCAA First Round victory on home turf, scoring a spot in tomorrow's Second Round with the Trojans' 4-0 sweep of Grand Canyon at Marks Stadium. USC collected a swift doubles point before a run of straight-set singles victories to lock in the win and improve to 21-6 overall.
USC drummed up the doubles point with wins on the top courts. Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye teamed up for a 6-3 win on court two to tee up top guns Daniel Cukierman and Riley Smith on court one. The #10 Trojan pair pocketed the first point for USC with a 6-4 win, and USC shifted gears for singles play with a 1-0 advantage on the board.
Bradley Frye got right back down to business in singles, clocking a speedy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jiri Novak on court one to bump USC ahead 2-0. At the top spot, #49 Daniel Cukierman stayed the course and made it a winning day as well in following his doubles win with a singles victory on a 6-1, 6-1 decision over GCU's Valentin Lang. Up 3-0, the Trojans had a trio closing in on potential finishers. At the No. 6 spot, Ryde Jackson hit the finish line first. He'd haul in a 6-3, 6-1 clincher over Loic Van Zeggelaar to plug a 4-0 win on the board for the Trojans.
USC now heads to the NCAA Second Round tomorrow (May 8) for a 1 p.m. rematch against visiting No. 28 Pepperdine. That match will determine who gets a ticket to Orlando with a place in the NCAA Round of 16.
