Oregon State Takes Game One Over No. 10 Arizona State

May 7, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State softball team opened its Dam Worth It series with a shutout win, 1-0, over visiting No. 10 Arizona State, Friday.

"It was a great team win," said head coach Laura Berg. "Mariah [Mazon] did a great job at keeping a lineup like theirs quiet. We need to clean up the defense and do a better job at hitting but overall it was a great victory."

Arizona State hit the first single straight to junior pitcher Mariah Mazon. The Beavers were able to hold her to first in the opening inning.

Oregon State answered with a run as a result of their first time in the dugout. After drawing a walk to get on base, freshman Madison Simon scored off a connection from sophomore Frankie Hammoude.

Mazon notched her first strikeout in the second and the OSU defense left one Sun Devil on base to hold the lead.

Freshmen Grace Messmer and Xiao Gin hit singles in the second inning but ASU was able to leave the two stranded to keep the Beaver lead to one.

Both teams left runners on base in the third after one single each.

The fourth inning saw three straight outs from the OSU defense and Mazon compiled three-straight strikeouts to complete the top of the fifth inning.

Continuing her pitching power, Mazon collected three more strikeouts in the top of the sixth.

Freshman Charity Sevaaetasi grabbed the fourth Beaver hit in the bottom of the sixth, followed by two batters reaching from a fielder's choice but Arizona State totaled three outs to the inning before OSU could advance their lead.

With runners on second and third, Oregon State notched its final out of the game to win the first contest of their series against Arizona State.

The Beavers will return with a second game against the Sun Devils tomorrow, Saturday (May 8), at 1 p.m.
