USC Women’s Tennis Upsets Florida to Advance to Round of 16

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--The USC women's tennis team continues on their pursuit of a national title. The No. 35 ranked Women of Troy upset the No. 12 ranked (and No. 11 seeded) Florida Gators 4-1 today (May 8) in Gainesville, Fla. 
 
Improving to 74-35 overall in the NCAA tournament, the Trojans have now punched their ticket to Orlando, Fla. for the Round of 16 and beyond.
 
Florida claimed the first doubles win of the match as #7 Kessler/Zein defeated USC's Cayetano/Kulikov 6-3 on court one. Trojans Ewing/McKee won their second doubles match of the weekend by beating Gators Jarlskog/McGinnis 7-5 from court two. The doubles point rested on the result of court three, and the Trojans prevailed. USC's Dvorak/Willson were victorious over Florida's Berlin/Dahlstrom 7-6 (2) to claim the doubles point for Troy. 
 
USC entered singles leading 1-0. The Gators quickly tied up the score at 1-1 as Sydney Berlin defeated Trojan redshirt senior Constance Branstine 6-2, 6-3 on court six. 
 
The tide then shifted in favor of the Trojans. Redshirt senior Clare McKee won her second match of the tournament for Troy by beating Florida's Amber McGinnis 6-2, 6-3 from court six. Sophomore No. 98 Eryn Cayetano tallied another Trojan victory by defeating Gator No. 71 Marlee Zein 6-3, 6-3 on court two to make the overall score 3-1. 
 
USC redshirt senior Summer Dvorak clinched the match for the Women of Troy with her 7-5, 6-3 victory over Florida's Sara Dahlstrom from court four. 
 
USC will now challenge No. 6 seed NC State on May 16 at 7 a.m. PT in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus.
