Amelia Garvey's 70 Leads USC Women's Golf In NCAA Regional First Round
Senior Amelia Garvey posted her third round under par in her last four outings, leading the No. 4 USC women's golf team during the first round of the NCAA Stanford Regional on Monday (May 10) at the Stanford G.C.
The Trojans are fifth in the 18-team field at 4-over 288, their sights still firmly set on a top 6 finish needed to advance to their 23rd consecutive NCAA Championships final field.
Host Stanford raced to first at 12-under 272 with Virginia Tech second at 2-under. The region's top seed, Wake Forest, signed for a collective 2-over 286 while second seed Oklahoma State registered a 287.
Nine teams are within nine strokes of second-place.
Garvey is tied for 12th with her 70, four back of a two-way tie for first. Her round was highlighted by four straight birdies between 5 and 8, turning at -4. She eventually came back to par before a birdie on 17 returned her to red for the round.
Senior Alyaa Abdulghany and freshman Brianna Navarrosa are tied for 26th at 1-over 72. Abdulghany birdied 18, her third of the day, while Navarrosa's round was highlighted by a 1-under front.
Junior Malia Nam is tied for 44th at 3-over 74 while senior Allisen Corpuz is tied for 62nd at 5-over 76.
USC will tee off at 9 a.m. PT in Tuesday's second round, paired with Oklahoma State and Arizona.
