Utah Men's Tennis Adds Bruno Caula To 2021-22 Roster

May 11, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's tennis program has added transfer Bruno Caula to next year's roster, arriving to the program as the Most Outstanding Performer of the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. Caula, who spent the previous three seasons at UNC Wilmington, played at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions this year to lead the program to a conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance.

"We are tremendously excited to add Bruno to our program this fall," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "Besides being a class act of a young man, he will add a ton of college experience and energy to our young roster."

The Cordoba, Argentina native was the CAA Co-Rookie of the Year in 2019 as a freshman before continuing his excellent college career with the Most Outstanding Performer recognition at this year's conference championships. The award came from the conference's coaches after he earned the match clinching point against William & Mary to send UNCW to the NCAA Championships.

Caula ranked as high as No. 27 in the Oracle/ITA doubles poll and earned four CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors this year as a junior. He totaled a 14-5 dual record this spring in doubles play and collected 11 singles wins. He earned wins over the then No. 40 and No. 55 ranked duos from Clemson and Georgia State, respectively, and also tallied a win over the top duo from No. 32 VCU to highlight his 2021 doubles season.

He earned the CAA Co-Rookie of the Year honor as a freshman after posting a 14-4 overall record in singles play between the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. He continued to grow the next year and despite having a shortened 2020 season, Caula managed to go 7-3 in doubles play before the season was ended and earn a CAA Player of the Week selection. In the Oracle/ITA doubles poll in the fall of 2019, he and his partner ranked No. 36 in the nation.

Prior to his college career, Caula was ranked in the top-3 in Argentina in every age group and was once ranked No. 176 in the ITF Junior World rankings.

Caula will join the Utes in the fall and will become the fourth Argentinian on the Utah men's tennis roster, joining Geronimo Busleiman, Franco Capalbo and Francisco Bastias. He will also be one of six international student-athletes currently on the 2021-22 squad.
