Arizona Drops Series Opener

May 13, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 8 Arizona fell to second-ranked UCLA, 8-0 in five innings on Thursday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.

UCLA hit five home runs in the game and got a shutout from Rachel Garcia in the circle.

The Cats managed just two hits in the game, a pair of infield singles from Janelle Meoño and Dejah Mulipola. Meoño also had a highlight-worthy home run robbery on the other side of the ball  later in the game.

Alyssa Denham (17-7) took the loss for Arizona. She gave up four runs -- all solo homers -- on five hits in 1.0 inning of work. Mariah Lopez pitched three innings and and allowed four runs on seven hits. Devyn Netz threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning to close it out.

The Bruins hung a three-spot in the top of the first inning on back-to-back-to-back two-out solo homers to take the early lead. They added two in the second and two more in the third to make it 7-0. A fourth-inning solo homer made it 8-0, good enough for the run-rule win.

Arizona dropped to 35-11, 12-8 Pac-12 with the loss while the Bruins improved to 39-3, 17-2 Pac-12. The two teams will meet in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4:30 p.m. MST.
