SALT LAKE CITY – Junior Sydney Sandez pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits, and Utah pounded out 10 hits to claim a 3-1 victory over Oregon State Thursday evening at Dumke Family Stadium. Haley Denning was 3-for-4 and Alyssa Barrera and Jordyn Gasper each went 2-for-3 and scored a run to lead Utah to a thrilling win in front of its home crowd in the opening game of a four-game Pac-12 series.
Sandez was masterful in the circle, striking out four batters and pitching out of a jam in several situations to earn her third complete game win and top her previous career high for wins in a season with 12.
Utah scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 Oregon State lead. Barrera led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on two fielder's choice plays. She scored on a single by Gasper, which moved Ellessa Bonstrom to second. Destiny Quiles then stepped up and drove a single into right field to score Bonstrom with the go-ahead run, and AJ Militello followed with a single to right center to bring home Gasper for a 3-1 Utah lead.
Sandez allowed just one hit over the final three innings to seal the win for Utah, which improves to 21-31 on the season (3-19 Pac-12). Oregon State is now 18-25 (5-17 Pac-12).
STANDOUT STAT
With two hits today, Alyssa Barrera now has 241 for her career and needs four more to reach the Utes' all-time top five.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Amy Hogue
"Our offense came to play today. (Mariah) Mazon is a great pitcher. Our hitters really competed well the entire game. Syd's complete game win was great to see. She got some big outs especially when there were runners on. We are looking forward to getting a series win tomorrow."
