Fielding Miscues Cost Huskies In Loss

May 14, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. – Some defensive mistakes cost Washington Friday as the Huskies fell to the Stanford Cardinal 8-0. Sis Bates, Morganne Flores, Jenn Cummings, and Kaija Gibson had Washington's hits, with Gibson doubling for Washington's only extra-base hit of the game.

Washington is 40-11 overall now heading into the regular season finale tomorrow against Stanford. The two losses today give Washington its longest losing streak of the year: the Huskies have not lost three games in a row since March of 2019.

Kelley Lynch, Sarah Willis, and Brooke Nelson all saw action in the circle for the Huskies. Nelson finished out the game, throwing 1.2 innings while not allowing an earned run.

SCORING
  • First Inning: A walk and an RBI double in the first inning gave Stanford an early 1-0 lead.
  • Second Inning: Back-to-back extra-base hits to start the inning helped Stanford add to its lead. Stanford would score twice in the frame, making it 3-0.
  • Third Inning: Some fielding mistakes helped Stanford score four runs in the frame. Washington committed two errors in the inning, with runs scoring on each and another coming in via a wild pitch. Stanford's lead extended to 7-0 with the big inning.
  • Fourth Inning: Another error cost the Huskies, as Stanford would reach to start the inning on the miscue, then score that runner a few batters later to make the game 8-0.

NOTES
  • Flores (1x1, BB) now has a seven-game hit streak, her longest hitting streak since an eight-game streak during the 2019 postseason.
  • In her last four games, Gibson (1x2, 2B) is hitting .429.

The regular season wraps up tomorrow as the Huskies play Stanford one last time, at 3:00 pm on the Pac-12 Network.
