CLE ELUM, Wash. – Oregon sits in sixth place after shooting 2 under in the opening round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional at the Tumble Creek Club Monday, led by Tom Gueant's 3-under 68 which puts him in a tie for fourth after 18 holes.
The Ducks are four shots behind co-leaders Wake Forest and San Francisco and just two shots outside the top five. The top five teams in each regional advance to the NCAA Championships.
"We had a solid day," said head coach Casey Martin. "We are in position if we play well and I feel like we are due for a breakthrough round. I'm hoping it's tomorrow."
How It Happened: Gueant got off to a fast start, making birdies at his first two holes before giving a shot back at 13. He followed with back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15 to get to 3 under, before picking up another shot at the par-4 18th to make the turn at 4 under. Gueant cooled off a bit on the front nine, however, making just one birdie at the par-4 third hole to go along with a pair of bogeys to get him in the clubhouse with a 3-under 68.
Nate Stember turned in the other under par round for the Ducks, shooting a 1-under 70 to sit in a tie for 15th. He was 3 over through 10 holes but turned things around over the final eight to get back under par. Stember birdied four of his final six holes, highlighted by three straight birdies from holes four through six to shoot 3 under on the front nine to finish his day.
Yuki Moriyama shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 26th. The freshman got hot to start his second nine of the day, getting to 2 under after birdies at one, four and six, but double bogeyed the par-5 eighth hole to drop back to even par.
Owen Avrit turned in a 2-over 73 to sit in a tie for 43rd place as the final counting score of the opening round for the Ducks. Craig Ronne shot a 5-over 76 to put him in a tie for 63rd.
