The Arizona State men's golf team struggled for the first nine holes at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional on Monday, but came back strong and is tied for fifth after the first 18 holes in the 54-hole tournament for the right to go to Grayhawk Golf Club and the NCAA Championships May 27-June 2.
The Sun Devils are one shot off the NCAA cutline at the UNM Championship Course of a top-five finish but just four shots off the lead in a crowded leaderboard. ASU shot 3-under 285 after being 9-over early in the round. Oregon State leads with 7-under 281.
Senior Chun An Yu shot 2-under 70 to lead the Sun Devils with five birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 579-yard No. 14. Yu was was 2-over through 13 holes but played the final five at 4-under, with the eagle and then birdies on No. 15 ad No. 18.
Sophomore David Puig was 3-under through eight that included a double bogey to start the day, but rallied and shot 4-under for the final 10 holes. Senior Mason Andersen and sophomore Ryggs Johnston both shot even 72.
