Cal Women’s Gymnastics Adds Abbey Scanlon

May 19, 2021

BERKELEY – The Cal women's gymnastics team will add Abbey Scanlon to the roster for the 2021 season, co head coaches Justin Howell and Elisabeth Crandall-Howell announced on Wednesday.

Scanlon will be the fifth addition to the class of 2021 as she joins Ella Cesario, Jordan Kane, Mya Lauzon and Madelyn Williams who all signed letters of intent in November.

Scanlon is a native of Sterling, Virginia, but she has been living in Illinois so that she can train at Legacy Elite Gymnastics, the same club as rising sophomores Andi Li and Gabby Perea. Scanlon is set to graduate from Saint Charles North High School in Illinois this spring.

"Abbey is a powerful athlete with a high level of difficulty," Crandall-Howell said. "She will make an immediate impact and Cal fans will appreciate her wide variety of skills. Her positive attitude, energy and passion for learning is infectious. We're so excited to watch her thrive in Berkeley!"

Scanlon qualified for the USA Gymnastics Developmental Program Nationals in both 2019 and 2021, finishing in a tie for 15th on floor exercise in the 2021 event that took place last week. She also was the 2019 State and Regional Champion. Scanlon secured qualification to the USA Championships in both 2016 and 2017.

Scanlon will join the Cal women's gymnastics program, which finished seventh at the NCAA Championship and fifth during the 2021 regular season. The Bears are returning all but one routine which competed at the NCAA Championships as they look to better what was the best season in school history to date. Cal set school records on uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and overall team score during the 2021 season. The Bears tied an NCAA record on uneven bars and Maya Bordas took home the NCAA Championship in the event.
