Van Klinken Named Pac-12 Women’s Field Athlete of the Year

May 19, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO - Throws U added another accolade Wednesday afternoon with the Pac-12 Conference Office awarding first-year Sun Devil Jorinde van Klinken Women's Field Athlete of the Year for her dominant performances in both the discus and shot put all season. The Assen, Netherlands, native brought home the conference discus title and finished second in the shot put at last weekend's Pac-12 Track Championships. She leads the NCAA in the disc throw and ranks 12th in the shot.

Van Klinken is the fourth Sun Devil to win the award, and ASU has been awarded the honor six times, last in 2018 when Magdalyn Ewen won it for the second consecutive season. The Sun Devils have nine Pac-12 field athlete of the year awards across both genders.

Van Klinken competed in six outdoor meets this season, and every final mark from each competition earned her a top-five all-time program mark. Her winning 62.58m/205-4 from the championships was an 11-foot PR and moved her to second all-time behind Leslie Deniz who threw 64.94/213-01 in 1983.

Four of her final six shot put tosses would've put her in the ASU top-7. Her best mark was 17.64m/57-10.5 from April 3 and ranks fifth all-time.

Van Klinken and the Sun Devils head to College Station, Texas, next week for the NCAA West Prelims hosted by Texas A&M.
