Klingler, Flores Have RBI Doubles, Huskies Win 3-0

May 21, 2021

SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies started Regionals with a 3-0 win over the Portland State Vikings Friday night. The game turned on two big doubles by the Dawgs: Baylee Klingler and Morganne Flores each had RBI doubles in the game, taking the lead in the first inning on Flores' two-bagger.

The Huskies are now 31-0 in Regionals play in Seattle under Heather Tarr. The Huskies last lost a Regionals game at home in 2002. Washington will face Michigan tomorrow at 3:00 pm, with the winner of that game advancing to the Regionals final on Sunday.

Flores and Sis Bates each had multiple hits in the game for the Huskies, with Bates scoring on both of Klingler and Flores' doubles. Noelle Hee also had a hit in the game with a single in the fourth.

Gabbie Plain allowed only three baserunners in the complete-game shutout. Plain retired the first 14 batters she faced, with two of the three Portland State baserunners coming in the fifth inning. Only one ball left the infield all game long, a foul out to leftfield.

SCORING
  • First Inning: Bates had an infield single, then came around to score as Flores ripped a double to the centerfield wall for her 50th RBI of the year.
  • Fifth Inning: Bates scored again after reaching base for the third time. This time, it was Klingler with the RBI double, allowing Bates to score from first and make it 2-0. A third run would score after an error on a steal allowed Klingler to hustle home.

NOTES
  • Flores (2x3, 2B, RBI) recorded her 50th RBI of the season, becoming the first Husky since Kristen Rivera with three seasons of 50+ RBI.
  • Flores tied Nikia Williams for the Husky postseason RBI record with her 25th.
  • Klingler (1x2, R, 2B, RBI) has hit .500 with six doubles and two homers her last ten games.
  • Bates (2x3, 2 R) has hit .455 in her last ten postseason games.
  • Plain (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K) has allowed just one run in five Regionals appearances in her career.
  • Plain now has a 0.77 ERA in postseason play in her career.

With today's win, the Huskies will face Michigan tomorrow at 3:00 pm. The winner of that game will advance to the Regionals finals on Sunday at 5:00 pm.
