Beavers Edged By Arizona In Series Finale

May 23, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jake Pfennigs worked a career-long seven innings and Troy Claunch extended his hit streak to 14 games but Oregon State was unable to hold on to a four-run lead in a 6-5 loss to Arizona Sunday in the three-game series finale at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Wade Meckler extended his hit streak to nine games in a 3-for-5 effort to help pace OSU's offense, which racked up 11 hits. Justin Boyd also tallied three hits to set a career-high for the freshman.

Claunch and Garret Forrester each had two hits. For Claunch, he extended his hit streak to a team-long 14 games with a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Claunch's RBI was the last of the day for the Beavers (33-20 overall, 15-12 Pac-12 Conference), who jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four. OSU scored three runs in the first, one in the third and one more in the fourth. The Wildcats, however, evened the game with four runs in the eighth, then went up 6-5 with a solo run in the ninth.

Pfennigs worked seven innings, scattering eight hits and four runs with four strikeouts. He did not figure in the decision. The loss was charged by Chase Watkins, who allowed four hits and two runs in two innings. He is now 2-4 on the year.

Arizona's (38-14, 21-9) Vince Vannelle picked up the win to improve to 4-2. He held the Beavers to two hits in two scoreless innings.
