Tjen Knocks Off No. 4 Seed to Move On at NCAAs

ORLANDO, Fla. – Janice Tjen moved on to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship after taking down the No. 4 overall seed in the tournament, Katarina Jokic of Georgia, 6-1, 6-4 in a second round matchup Monday morning,
 
Tjen got off to a strong start in the opening set, taking a commanding 4-0 lead on the way to taking the first frame, 6-1. The two then went back-and-forth to open the second set, with neither player being able to hold serve. Tjen won the last three games to clinch the match breaking Jokic's serve for the fourth time in the set to make it 4-4, before holding serve to go up 5-4 and winning securing the clincher with another break point.
 
By advancing to the round of 16, Tjen will earn a spot on the ITA All-America Team, becoming just the third Duck ever to be named an All-American (Daria Panova - 2003, 2004; Courtney Nagle - 2003). The true freshman is just the second Oregon player ever to reach the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship, joining Panova who did it in 2003. No Duck has ever advanced beyond the round of 16 at the individual championship.
 
Tjen moved to 20-2 on the year in singles play and has now won each of her last eight singles matches, seven of which have come against ranked opponents. She improved ton 8-2 on the year in matches against ranked foes, and has still lost just seven sets all season.
 
Up next, Tjen will take on the 19th-ranked player in the latest ITA Singles Rankings in Georgia Drummy of Duke for a spot in the national quarterfinals. Match time for Tuesday is still TBA.
