Colorado Sends 25 To NCAA West Preliminaries

BOULDER – Colorado track and field is sending a large squad of 25 student-athletes to the NCAA West Preliminaries Wednesday May 26 to Saturday May 29 in College Station at Texas A&M.
 
The CU women racked up 16 athletes to the prelims across eight different events. The men are sending nine individuals in five different events. All athletes will be battling for a top-12 spot in their events to advance to the 2021 NCAA Track and Field Championships June 9-June 12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
 
The men kick things off Wednesday with a pair of finals as Dominique Williams competes first in the men's hammer throw finals and John Dressel closes out the day with the 10,000 finals. Ronald Sayles will compete in the 400 prelims while Aaron McCoy runs the 400 hurdle prelims.
 
Thursday will be the first day for the women as Avery McMullen and Jada Green start things off with finals in the long jump and javelin, respectfully. Action hits full force at 5:30 p.m. MT when Sage Hurta leads a group of four CU women in the 1,500. Hurta, the nation's top-ranked 1,500 runner, will run the prelims with Micaela Degenero, Rachel McArthur and Annie Hill as they all try to qualify for Saturday's final. A few hours later will see Eriana Henderson and Abbey Glynn looking to punch their ticket to the final in the 400 hurdles. The night will cap off with the finals in the 10,000 where Abby Nichols, Emily Covert, Elizabeth Constien and Kaitlyn Barthell will all try and earn a top-12 result to advance to the NCAA Championships.
 
Friday's finals begin much later at 6:10 p.m. for Sayles in the open 400 and McCoy in the 400 hurdles shortly after. Following that, Eduardo Herrera makes his attempt at another NCAA Championships in the 5,000 finals along with Dressel and Alec Hornecker. Sayles and McCoy will close out the men's competition in the 4x400 relay with a combination of Tyler Williams, Kendal Smith and Ian Gilmore at 8:15 p.m.
 
The final day of competition for the women starts out with a bang as the women's 1,500 finals begin at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Madie Boreman and Alisa Meraz-Fishbein run the final of the steeplechase at 5:10 p.m. followed by the 400 hurdle finals. Nichols, Hill and Barthell will have another opportunity at an NCAA Championship bid in the women's 5,000 final at 7:30 p.m., followed by Henderson and Glynn joining Tamia Badal and Jaida Drame in the 4x400 relay final at 8:15 p.m.
