Tjen’s Memorable Run Ends in Semis

ORLANDO, Fla. – Janice Tjen's incredible run at the NCAA Singles Championship came to an end in the national semifinals, following a 7-6(4), 6-0 loss to defending national champion, Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami (FL).
 
Tjen became the first player in program history to advance to at least the quarterfinal round of the singles championship, and became the first Pac-12 player to reach the national semifinals since 2015.
 
"It was a very good season for me," said Tjen. "I'm happy with my results this season and at this tournament and am going to work harder and come back even stronger. I will use what I learned today going forward in my career."

The freshman got off to a hot start in the opening set, going up 3-0 on the No. 1 player in the country, but Perez-Somarriba would respond by winning the next three games to tie it up at three. The two players then went back-and-forth, with each holding serve twice to make it 5-5 late in the opening frame.
 
Perez-Somarriba broke serve to go up 6-5, but Tjen responded with a break of her own to tie things up again at six and send the opening set into a tiebreaker. After going down 6-1 in the tiebreak, Tjen rallied for three straight points to make it 6-4, but Perez-Somarriba took the next point to win an opening set battle that took over an hour, 7-6(4). The Hurricanes' senior took control early in the second set and rolled to a 6-0 win to clinch the match and hand Tjen just her third singles loss this year.
 
Tjen finished the year 22-3 in singles play and won 10 of her final 11 singles matches, nine of which came against ranked opponents. She ended the year 10-3 in matches against ranked foes, and lost just nine sets all season. Tjen's singles winning percentage on the season of .880 is also the best single-season win percentage in school history and her 22 wins are tied for 10th in a season in UO history despite not playing a fall season.
