Cougs Win 2020-21 Boeing Apple Cup Series

Jun 1, 2021

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State earned its first win in the Boeing Apple Cup Series this past Saturday, May 29, as the WSU Cougar baseball team defeated Washington, 9-1, at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Cougs defeated the Huskies, 190-185, to become the 2020-21 Boeing Apple Cup Series champions. WSU entered last week's baseball series against UW needing to win two of the three games to win the Boeing Apple Cup Series. The Cougars were able to rise to the challenge in the three-game set, as they won Thursday's opener, 8-1, before earning an eight-run victory over the Huskies in Saturday's series finale.

The Boeing Apple Cup Series began prior to the start of the 2018-19 season, expanding the historic Apple Cup football game against Washington State and Washington to an all-sports series with teams receiving points based on game results throughout a season.

The WSU women's basketball team earned a department-best 60 points in the Boeing Apple Cup Series this season, as the Cougs swept Washington. The Washington State baseball team earned 50 points, while the Cougar men's basketball team picked up 45 points after splitting their season series with UW. The Washington State soccer, tennis and track and field teams added 10 points each, while the Cougar rowing team picked up five points to round out the team scoring. No football or volleyball games were played between Washington State and Washington this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington won the inaugural Boeing Apple Cup Series in 2018-19. The second series was canceled in 2019-20 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
