Jun 3, 2021
Tyler Kopp is one of six Golden Bears who will swim in Wave I of the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

OMAHA, Neb. – Wave I of the 2021 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials starts Friday at the CHI Health Center, and six Golden Bears will represent the California men's swimming & diving program across four days of competition on June 4-7.

Forrest Frazier, Matthew Jensen, Tyler Kopp, Colby Mefford, Kyle Millis and Michael Petrides – all current members of Cal's collegiate team – are listed on the Wave I psych sheet. The top two finishers in each event at Wave I will advance to the Wave II meet on June 13-20, which will determine the U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Tokyo.

Prelims will begin at 8 a.m. (PDT) and be streamed by USA Swimming, while Olympic Channel will broadcast the nightly finals at 5 p.m. (PDT).

Cal's six swimmers competing in Wave I will swim in a total of nine events:

  • Forrest Frazier » 100m breast
  • Matthew Jensen » 100m free, 100m fly
  • Tyler Kopp » 400m IM
  • Colby Mefford » 400m free, 200m back, 200m fly
  • Kyle Millis » 100m back
  • Michael Petrides » 200m free, 400m free

The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials were split into two meets – Wave I and Wave II – to allow for a smaller number of athletes to be on site at the CHI Health Center in Omaha amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The swimmers who are competing in Wave I this weekend met the original Olympic Trial qualifying times, while swimmers who hit a more recent, faster set of qualifying times were invited to Wave II.
