Four Bears Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

BERKELEY -  Cal women's soccer's athletic prowess is matched with academic excellence as four Golden Bears were named to the 2020-21 Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team, selected by CoSIDA, the organization announced on Thursday. Angelina Anderson, Emily Smith, Emma Westin, and Paige Metayer were all voted to the District 8 First Team.

The 2020-21 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District® will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.

This marks the third consecutive year Smith has earned First Team Academic All-District honors. The 2020 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year, the defender is double majoring in applied mathematics and data science while also serving as team captain for the Bears. In addition to her academic accolades, Smith was selected in the 2021 NWSL Draft with the 31st overall pick by Racing Louisville and will report to Louisville following her fifth and final season with Cal in the fall. 

A mainstay in the Bears' midfield, Metayer earned her second Academic All-District Honor this season and has started 48 consecutive games since joining the Bears. A sophomore from Irvine, Metayer is majoring in cognitive science.

Fellow team captain, Westin, collected her second straight Academic All-District honor. A junior forward/midfielder from Stockholm, Sweden, Westin is majoring in business administration and led the Bears in goals, assists, and points this season. 

This is the first-career Academic All-District honor for Angelina Anderson, the 2019 Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and National Freshman of the Year. The sophomore collected 67 saves in the truncated 2020-21 season, the second-most in the Pac-12. Anderson, a Danville native and team captain, is majoring in Psychology. 

Academic success is prevalent within the Cal women's soccer program with 22 Bears making the 2020 Pac-12 honor roll.
