DENVER – University of Colorado sophomore Hailey Schalk (Erie, Colo.) recorded the highest finish by a current and former Buffalo at the 2021 COBank Colorado Women's Open, tying for 10th on Friday with a 3-under 213.

Schalk, who finished her freshman season with the Buffs in May, also recorded the low amateur score. Two years ago her former CU teammate, Kirsty Hodgkins, won the honor at the same event.

"It's very special to win low amateur especially against such a strong field," she said. "My goal was to make the cut this week and I exceeded my expectations which always feels great! I'm feeling more confident with my game in general. This week was definitely a test. Overall very happy with my finish!

Schalk was tied for 22nd after the first round, firing an even 72 at the 6,368-yard, par 72 Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. On the second day, she recorded a 2-under and moved up 12 spots into a tie for 10th and easily made the cut for the final round. She held strong on the last day, finishing with a 71 to record a 1-under 213 for the tournament.

"I'm very, very happy for Hailey and all the work that she's put in this last year," associate head coach Brent Franklin said. "I was really proud of her and happy for her at the same time for seeing some of the results and watching her play. She's taking a big step forward and her confidence seems to be growing, she seems to be enjoying her game now and enjoying playing, and as I said, it just makes me happy to see her make some good strides and really enjoy the competition. As we know this game is really hard and it beats you up a lot, so it's wonderful to see them have some success. I think she's going to continue to improve and continue to get better. I'm just really happy for her. I think I think she did a tremendous job this week."

During the three-day event, Schalk recorded 13 birdies, which included five in the second round. She also had four in the first and third rounds. During Friday's third round, she recorded back-to-back-to-back birdies to finish the front nine 2-under (34). She also entered the final hole 3-under for the day but a bogey put her at 1-under for the round.

CU had two former Buffs in the final round, Robyn Choi and Brittany Fan, who tied for 15th (214). Choi carded rounds of 70-71-73, while Fan shot 67-72-75. Fan was tied for second after the first round, while Choi was tied for ninth, but after the second round Fan had moved to third and Choi had moved into a tie for sixth.

Savannah Vilaubi won the tournament with a 15-under. She recorded rounds of 69-64-68.

CU had a few others in the tournament who did not make the cut for the final round. Those individuals were Malak Bouraeda (78-73—151), Issy Simpson (80-75—155), Alisha Lau (77-83—160) and former Buff Erin (Kerr) Houtsma (85-82—167).
