Irvin Blanks Guachos in Career Outing, Wildcats Advance to Regional Final

Jun 5, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. — A career night from southpaw Garrett Irvin spearheaded a 4-0 victory for the Arizona Wildcats (42-15) over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (40-19) in game four of the Tucson Regional. The victory pushed the Cats into the Regional Final on Sunday evening.

Irvin was nearly untouchable for Arizona, tossing a three-hit shutout with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He got stronger as the game progressed and polished off the gem by recording his final four outs via strikeout. The Gauchos only managed four baserunners all night, only one of which ever advanced beyond first base.

Irvin's electric performance was his second complete game of the season, following his one-run complete game against Washington three weeks ago. It marked Arizona's first postseason shutout since blanking Coastal Carolina 3-0 in the first game of the 2016 College World Series final series.

The Arizona offense provided four runs behind Irvin to secure the win. Daniel Susac and Branden Boissiere both chipped in with RBI singles in the first and third innings, respectively, while Tony Bullard continued his hot hitting with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to give the Wildcats some breathing room.
