Future Bruins Excel at U.S. Gymnastics Championships
Fort Worth, Texas - A pair of incoming UCLA freshmen finished in the Top 4 after two days of competition at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Jordan Chiles placed third overall with a two-day score of 114.450, while Emma Malabuyo finished fourth with a 110.450. Additionally, Emily Lee placed 13th with a mark of 108.250.
All three have been named to the U.S. National Team and will compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials in St. Louis June 24-27. This will be Chiles' ninth year on the national team, Malabuyo's fourth, and Lee's third.
Chiles' consistency this season has been outstanding, as she has scored 56.90 or higher in the all-around in each meet she has competed. She scored 56.90 on day one of the Championships and a personal-best 57.55 on day two, when she earned scores of 14.0 or higher on every event. Chiles finished in third place on vault with a two-day score of 29.250 (14.65 on day one, 14.60 on day two), and ranked fourth on bars, beam and floor.
Malabuyo posted an all-around total of 56.00 on day two to move up three spots from seventh place after day one. Her 14.60 on beam Sunday was the third-highest score of the competition on that event, just 0.3 behind Simone Biles. Malabuyo finished in sixth place overall on beam and seventh on both uneven bars and floor exercise.
Lee improved her all-around score on day two, recording a 54.55 on Sunday, with 13.0 or higher on all four events, including a 13.65 on beam and 14.5 on vault. She also scored 13.85 on beam on day one. Lee finished the meet in 13th place with a two-day all-around total of 108.250.
