HAMMERSMITH, London – Former Cal standout Rowan McKellar will compete for Team Great Britain as part of the women's four (W4-) at the Tokyo Olympics next month, the British Olympic Association announced Wednesday.
McKellar, who rowed at Cal from 2014-17, was one of 45 rowers to be selected to compete for Team GB in Tokyo.
"We are thrilled for Rowan. She made Team GB in 2020, then COVID-19 canceled everything about a day after she qualified," said Cal head coach Al Acosta. "Thankfully, she stayed healthy and continued to get faster this year. Rowan is our third alum to make an Olympic team this year, with hopefully more announcements to come. We look forward to cheering her on as she helps make Tokyo 'Bear Territory'."
As a senior at Cal in 2017, McKellar earned All-Pac-12 honors for her efforts stroking the First Varsity 8+. Since making her senior debut following graduation in 2017, McKellar has claimed World Cup silver in the women's eight and bronze in the pair.
McKellar is the third former Cal women's rower to qualify for the upcoming Summer Olympics. Kendall Chase, a 2016 graduate, was named to the U.S. Olympic Team as part of the women's quad on June 4, and Kara Kohler, a 2014 graduate, qualified in the U.S. single sculls in February.
The women's rowing event runs July 23-30 at the Sea Forest Waterway near central Tokyo.
