EUGENE, Oregon - For the second time in 2021, Turner Washington is a national champion!
Arizona State opened the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon today in a big way. Washington threw 21.10m/69-2.75 in the third round of the shot put to win the national crown and give ASU it's second NCAA title this year. The Sun Devils also celebrated Jamar Marshall Jr. advancing to the final round of the 110m hurdles after finishing fourth overall in the semifinals. Carlan Naisant finished 19th in the javelin.

This is Washington's second NCAA shot put title in 2021. The two-time USTFCCCA West Region Male Field Athlete of the Year previously won the indoor crown March 12 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Washington's win is ASU's sixth men's shot put title and first since 2012 when program record-holder Jordan Clarke went back-to-back in the event. Magdalyn Ewen and Samantha Noennig won women's shot put titles in 2018 and 2019, respectively. This marks the fifth outdoor throws crown since Brian Blutreich took over coaching throws in 2016.

On the track, freshman Jamar Marshall Jr. ran 13.57 in the 110m hurdles, finishing second in heat three and fourth overall. It's 0.08 away from his program-best PR set at the this season's NCAA West Prelims.

ASU's final competitor on day one of the championships was Carlan Naisant. Naisant threw 64.83m/212-8 on his first heave which momentarily put him second in the field. He ultimately went on to finish eighth in the heat and 19th overall.

The Maroon and Gold keep things going tomorrow with four women competing across three disciplines. Shelby Moran and Beatrice Llano take on the hammer throw, Alizee Minard throws in the javelin, and Olympian-to-be Jorinde van Klinken throws in the shot put.
