Nineteen Compete at Trials

Jun 16, 2021

EUGENE, Ore. – Six Stanford athletes and 12 alumni compete at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, which begin Friday at Hayward Field.

A seventh member of the 2021 Stanford team, Charles Hicks, is competing for a spot on the team of Great Britain. Hicks, 19, runs the 5,000 at the British trials in Manchester, England, on June 26.

The top three in each event at the U.S. Trials (June 18-27) can qualify for the Olympic Games (July 23-August 8) as long they have the Olympic standard or are high enough in the world rankings to earn a berth in Tokyo.

Stanford's competitors in Eugene are Liam Christensen (men's javelin), Ella Donaghu (women's 1,500 meters), Julia Heymach (women's 1,500), Keyshawn King (men's triple jump), Virginia Miller (women's javelin), and Alexa Rossum (women's 200).

Men's alums are Grant Fisher (5,000, 10,000), Sean McGorty (1,500, 3,000 steeplechase, 10,000), Thomas Ratcliffe (5,000), and Harrison Williams (decathlon).

Alumnae are Valarie Allman (discus), Olivia Baker (800), Sarah Bei Hall (10,000), Elise Cranny (1,500, 5,000, 10,000), Vanessa Fraser (5,000, 10,000), Rebecca Mehra (800, 1,500), Fiona O'Keeffe (10,000), and Summer Pierson (discus).

The Cardinal program already can claim three Olympic qualifiers: Malindi Elmore '02 (Canada) in the women's marathon, Jacob Riley '11 (U.S.) in the men's marathon, and Katerina Stefanidi '12 (Greece) in the women's pole vault. Stefanidi is the defending Olympic champion.

Also, Mackenzie Little '19 (women's javelin) and Steven Solomon '16 (men's 400) are high enough in the world rankings to be named to the Australian squad. However, nothing will be determined after until the Olympic qualifying window closes on June 29.

The top Stanford-affiliated athlete is Allman, who is No. 4 in the world and No. 1 among Americans this year in the discus, throwing 222-3 (67.74m) June 6 in Prairie View, Texas. Stefanidi is No. 6 in the pole vault at 15-9 (4.80m), and Cranny is No. 12 in the 10,000 and No. 16 in the 1,500.

Among the men, Williams is No. 5 in the world and No. 2 in the U.S. after scoring 8,439 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, on March 7. Fisher is No. 11 in the 10,000 (27:11.29) and No. 14 in the 5,000 (13:02.53) and is the fastest American this year at both distances. McGorty is the No. 2 American in the 5,000.
