Berry, Susac Earn Freshman All-America Nods

Jun 17, 2021

OMAHA, Neb. — Freshman Arizona Baseball standouts Jacob Berry and Daniel Susac both earned First Team Freshman All-America recognition from the NCBWA earlier this week, adding to their already impressive list of honors and awards.

Arizona is one of just five programs nationally with two NCBWA Freshman All-Americans this season. They are joined by duos from LSU, Texas Tech, California, and TCU. The Wildcats have now placed two players on the NCBWA Freshman All-America First Team in back-to-back seasons.

Berry, who was honored as a designated hitter, has posted an astounding .359 batting average with 53 runs scored, 18 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs, and 70 RBI through the NCAA Super Regional round of the postseason. The NCBWA is the second national publication to tab Berry as a Freshman All-American.

Susac, the Wildcats everyday catcher, swatted .329 with 47 runs, 21 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, and 61 RBI in his first collegiate campaign. Through 30 Pac-12 games he notched a .363 batting average and set numerous Arizona freshman conference records.

Both Berry and Susac blasted double-digit home runs in 2021, becoming the first Wildcat freshman duo to accomplish the feat. Each of the Baby Bombers collected eight long balls in Pac-12 play, tying the record set by Arizona home run king Shelley Duncan in 1999.

Berry, Susac, and the rest of the Wildcats open the 2021 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday night with a matchup against Vanderbilt. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. MST with a television broadcast on ESPN.
